Traumatic experiences and encounters leave our bodily energies wounded, reeling and searching for resolution. When we cannot find this resolution, these energies can become trapped within our bodies, showing up over and over again, sometimes for years. When we resist them, they only become more persistent.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to clear your body of these traumas is through breathwork. The act of breathing, something that we do everyday without a second thought, possesses the power to clear our bodies of these negative energies.
This type of breathing is different, however. It is the conscious allowance of our very life force to flow in and out of our bodies with purpose.
How to perform the Breathwork
This ritual should be personalized to the individual; make your space your own by setting up candles, playing music, burning sage, or adding layers of softness, like pillows and blankets.
As you lay in your space, allow yourself to feel relaxed and secure in your body.
Breathe naturally at first as your think softly about where you want your hands to be, whether they be at your side or you want one on your stomach and one on your heart.
First, deeply inhale into your tummy, followed by a second deep inhale through the heart. Your body should feel an excess of oxygen. Be aware of the different thoughts and feelings you have during this exercise; acknowledge them, and then let them go free.
Breathe out of your mouth as your awareness rises.
*This routine: belly, heart, mouth, *can be repeated for up to a maximum of 30 minutes, and it should be followed with 15 minutes of relaxed, natural breathing.
If you find yourself growing uncomfortable during the process, slow your tempo and listen to your body. Be sure to let go of whatever feelings arise as you do this. Do not be afraid to cry, shout, and yell if you feel so inclined.
As you finish, remain in the lying Savasana posture. If you feel tingly, a little exhausted, or tight in the hands, these are all signs that you were able to move those energies around.
