Watch: Volkswagen’s New AWD Electric Van Looks Just Like Their Iconic Surf Van From the 50s
If you grew up in a surfing community in the 50s or 60s, there’s a good chance you saw the notorious Volkswagen Microbus making trips along the coastline. This once beloved bus, often driven by surf junkies who could cram into it their boards and sleeping supplies, was an icon during the era of the Beach Boys.
And now, VW seems to have brought it back to life with a 2017 concept design featuring all-wheel drive, an electric engine, and self-driving capabilities.
Meet the I.D. Buzz.
VW unveiled the I.D. Buzz at the North American International Auto Show that takes place in Detroit, and we couldn’t be more excited about it.
While we’re going to have to wait until 2022 to purchase one, the wait will likely be more than worth it. Volkswagen issued a press release detailing all of the new features this bus will have and they are pretty amazing.
The engine is actually two electric motors that boast 369 horsepower and a driving range of up to 270 miles on a single charge. It has all-wheel drive, fully autonomous self-driving capabilities and a park assist that will park the vehicle for you (just to name a few).
Of course, this van will very clearly be nothing like the Microbus of the 50s, but it’s safe to say that the spirit of the Microbus is inherent within VW’s latest iteration of this fantastic driving machine.
