People who thrive to become great, know what it takes to be one, and have excellent internal discipline and ways to deal with thoughts that stop them from thinking great things that they can do.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?” – Nelson Mandela
You often look at the lives of your favorite personalities like they are the luckiest in the world. You believe that what they have, or what your friends have, you might not ever be able to have it. When you see yourself living a mediocre or an average life, and not the life of your friends who have more than 50,000 followers on Instagram (for example), you feel disheartened as if there is nothing great about your life.
But, how many times have you asked yourself these questions- "Why can't you be great?", or "Why can't you have a great life?" or "What makes your life not so great?". To have a great life, or to be a great person, you must know that there is no time restraint, age barrier or life constraint. All you need to have is the compassion, determination and that drive to push you till you reach the top of the mountain.
Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Kennedy, Gandhi, Oprah Winfrey and many more are the best examples of great people who have done great things in life. They also had a normal life before they became famous and in fact, some of them had a troublesome life that inspired them into becoming what they are known for today. “Great men are not born great, they grow great . . .” ― Mario Puzo
Therefore, greatness is not something that most people are born with but is something that needs to be attained and made. How many times have you seen a great person doing things that you knew you could too, but you preferred living under the cocoon and your comfort zone? Plenty, right? Perhaps the question is not whether you can be great, it is whether you can do what it takes to be great.
Different facets matter here- like some people are lazy and, some don't want to try new things or are afraid of failing, some just don't have the drive to make their lives any different and are happy the way things are. These are the habits, and concerns that you will never find in people who are great. People who thrive to become great, know what it takes to be one, and have excellent internal discipline and ways to deal with thoughts that stop them from thinking great things that they can do. Not many can withstand the daily disciplined life, with the same determination and compassion.
One of the best example of a great person who wasn't born with great genes and life, but today is one of the richest African American in the world is Oprah Winfrey. She was born with nothing to be grateful for. In fact, she had no father and was raped when she was only 9. She also lost a baby in infancy and was soon sent away to live in a new city with a foster parent. Can you imagine the drive she must have had in her, that made her one of the greatest people in all times? “In every aspect of our lives, we are always asking ourselves, How am I of value? What is my worth? Yet I believe that worthiness is our birthright.” – Oprah Winfrey
You can either choose to do great things and become great or can just accept life the way it is. You can become great if you decide on putting your mind and heart into doing something which does not come under your comfort zone. It is true that not every person who does that turn out great, as certain people are predisposed to certain talents and activities- like some are natural athletes, some are born with a fast mind to solve math sums and some are born with a good voice.
Knowing the fact that these people have a massive advantage over the rest of the people who barely know about themselves, becoming a great person never comes easy for anyone. You must know what you want, and does your dream involve helping others or just yourself? A person who becomes great by growing in the journey of life must have good things to teach, preach and help others- because of which their greatness become known, hence making the great of all.
"The mark of a great man is one who knows when to set aside the important things in order to accomplish the vital ones.” ― Brandon Sanderson
