Is Breastfeeding In Public Appropriate? Woman Responds Brilliantly When Asked To Cover Up While Feeding Her Infant

A Facebook user shared a picture that showed the woman covering when the man requested her to cover, but in a different way.

We are living in a world where people are confused about many things. They either do not know how to respond, or their response is influenced by societal biases and conservative mind. A human body goes through many natural processes however, not everyone looks at it as simply nature's process. Even in our present time, many find natural acts like sex, breastfeeding and even menstrual cycle as impure, and inappropriate.

And while every human being has been a part of the most natural process i.e. breastfeeding, growing up and watching it happening in front of them grosses them out. Often, women find themselves in uncomfortable and awkward situations for indulging in things as basic as breastfeeding. They have experienced pretty much a lot of shame while nursing their babies in public. A mother in Texas was asked to 'cover-up' herself while she was breastfeeding her infant in public. In response after being asked to cover up has stirred up the internet with people cheering her for being a total badass and showing the man his place. It has collected over 2.1 lakhs shares and more than 1.2 lakh reactions.

A Facebook user, Carol Lockwood shared a picture on Facebook and wrote, "A friend's daughter-in-law was told to "cover up" while feeding her baby, so she did!" The post showed the woman covering her face when the man had asked her to cover her breasts. The woman who was asked 'to cover' while breastfeeding was identified as Melanie Dudley. She told TODAY.com that most of the time she prefers breastfeeding when she is not in public.

The mother of a three-month-old baby, however, was in a place which was way too hot for her to cover the baby and herself, as even her baby was sweating because of the heat. "I did have the cover on, but it was so hot. It was like, 95 degrees, and my little baby was sweating," the Texas mom recalled. "I said, ‘You know what? I'm on vacation, I'm taking this off.’” It was only when she was asked by a man to cover up that left her in shock and also with a brilliant response. “I was kind of stunned," she said.

"I just put it (the nursing cover) over my head. I don't know why," she added. "It wasn't like a salacious fight or anything. That was just my response. I had no words so I thought, I'll just cover my head instead." The picture was clicked by her husband which thereafter went viral on the internet. "It's 2018. She is feeding her baby! Get over it. It's so sad we live in such a judgmental world," says one Facebook user. "Even better would have been to cover the jerk's head," says another. "I don't understand why people just can't look away if they're offended. Dude, live and let live," says a third.

The mother's action surely has inspired other mothers. She told Yahoo Lifestyle, "Breastfeeding is hard enough. This is another layer we don't need to deal with." She continued, “I just can't believe it. It's wild to me,” she said. “If there's a larger message to this, it’s just be supportive.” The post has also received negative comments, but Dudley is shocked to see the support she has got from the rest of the world.

Some people who expressed their discomfort with public breastfeeding advised her to nurse in the bathroom, which according to her was not such a clean idea. “That's not very hygienic,” she said. “I hope the momentum keeps growing. Let's be supportive of women who want to nurse in public, with or without a cover," she said. "I mean, just do your thing. It's not hurting anyone."
